ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Thursday amended its public assistance disaster declaration to make additional hurricane recovery assistance available to governments and non-profit agencies in six more counties.

Brevard, Flagler, Glades, Hendry, Manatee and Hillsborough counties are now eligible for assistance in repairing or restoring facilities in five new categories: roads and bridges, water control facilities, public buildings, public utilities, and parks and recreation areas.

These counties already had been declared eligible for assistance with debris removal and emergency protective measures.

Brevard, Flagler, Glades, Hendry and Manatee are among 26 counties already declared eligible for Individual Assistance, the program that provides financial aid to individuals and families that suffered losses when Hurricane Charley hit the state August 13.

The State Emergency Response Team (SERT) is a collaboration of Florida’s emergency management agencies led by the state coordinating officer. SERT’S mission is to ensure that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them, and mitigate their impact. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
