CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- The deadline for registering for disaster unemployment by those who work in Fayette, Lincoln and Logan Counties whose jobs were lost or interrupted by the severe storms that began in late July is September 9. Residents who work in Mingo County and sustained storm damage have until September 22 to apply.

Self-employed and unemployed workers not covered by regular state unemployment insurance programs may apply for this federally funded assistance, but the deadline for doing so is just days away.

Applicants should take their social security number with them when visiting the nearest state or county unemployment registration office. Disaster unemployment assistance is different from regular unemployment insurance.

It applies to those who can’t work because their jobs were lost or interrupted by the storm, or can’t travel to their workplace because of debris-clogged or flooded roads; are self-employed but prevented from working due to the effects of flooding; are the major support of a household because of injury or death to the usual head of household; or can’t work because of injury caused as a direct result of the disaster.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
