Disaster Officials Move Quickly To Open Two Disaster Recovery Centers

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and State of Florida officials announced today that Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) will begin opening Monday, Aug. 16 to serve victims of Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricane Charley.

The first two centers, which will be open 7 days a week until further notice, are located in Charlotte and Lee counties.

Disaster victims are urged to register first for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Those who have questions may visit the center to meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. Representatives of local, state and federal agencies, as well as voluntary agencies, will be on hand to provide program and service information.

U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) staff will also be available at the centers to assist victims with low-interest loan applications. Personnel at the centers can also provide disaster housing information, technical assistance on how to reduce future disaster damages, and referrals to other federal and state assistance programs.

March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
