ESSINGTON, Pa. -- While local residents recover from recent severe storms and flooding, disaster recovery officials urge them to keep an eye to the sky this weekend as heavy rains from Bonnie and Charley sweep through Pennsylvania.

“When strong storms come through back-to-back like this, preparedness is the key,” Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies said. “We can’t prevent the storms; but, armed with some good information, residents might prevent some damage from future flooding and high winds.”

“We have had a wet summer in much of the commonwealth, and the ground is saturated,” State Coordinating Officer David M. Sanko said. “Additional rainfall in a short period of time can cause flash flooding.”

Below are some tips to help Pennsylvanians prepare for this weekend:

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
