INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Effective 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 4 the Crawford County Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) located at Marengo Elementary School, 179 Elm Street, will be permanently closed, state and federal recovery officials announced today. The center opened June 7 and has served 541 residents.
“Disaster Recovery Centers are opened temporarily after a Presidential disaster declaration to assist residents in their recovery,” said Justo “Tito” Hernandez, federal coordinating officer.
“Although the deadline to apply for assistance has passed, disaster victims may still obtain information regarding the status of their applications by calling toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Hearing or speech impaired individuals can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.”
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
