Dededo, Guam -- Public Assistance has been approved for Saipan and Tinian to help local governments recover from the effects of Typhoon Pongsona which struck the islands on December 8, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today.
FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh said Public Assistance was approved based upon initial damage assessments gathered by federal, CNMI and local officials.
Under the declaration federal funding will pay 75 percent of the approved cost for debris removal, emergency services related to the disaster, and permanent restoration to public facilities damaged by Pongsona. Funds also will be available for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks.
The declaration authorizes assistance to include roads and bridges, water control facilities, buildings and equipment, utilities, recreation facilities and other items. Certain private non-profit (PNP) organizations also may receive assistance. Eligible PNPs include educational, emergency, medical, rehabilitation, and temporary or permanent custodial care facilities, utilities, and other PNP facilities, which provide essential services of a governmental nature to the general public.
