Tillamook County Pursues Disaster Resistance

SALEM, Ore. -- On Tuesday, May 25, 1999 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director James Lee Witt will officially welcome Tillamook County as the newest member of Project Impact: building disaster-resistant communities, a national initiative designed to change the way America deals with disasters. After on-site tours of "critter-pads" that provide local dairy stock with high-ground sanctuary from flood waters, James Lee Witt and Tillamook County Project Impact partners will visit Nehalem-area elevation projects that protect homes and businesses from future flooding. The formal signing ceremony will be held at the Tillamook County Courthouse at 3:30 p.m.
According to County Commissioner Sue Cameron, the concept of taking action before disaster strikes, was not a hard sell in Tillamook County, but was certainly a welcome opportunity. "Our Project Impact tool box reflects more than a decade of 'lessons learned,' culminating in our Performance Partnership," said Cameron. "With over 100 inches of annual rainfall, Project Impact-style partnerships fuel the long-term, sustainable solutions so essential to protecting our communities."
