Oregon Hosts National Floodplain Conference
Reducing Flood Risk/Flood Losses in 21st Century

Seattle, May 5, 1999 -- The Association of State Floodplain Managers' (ASFPM) 23rd Annual Conference will be held at the Portland Mariott in Portland, Oregon, May 23-29 1999. This year's theme, "Flood Loss Reduction in the 21st Century," will concentrate on techniques to mitigate against the effects of flooding before floodwaters rise, as the surest and most cost effective options for reducing the effects of future flooding.
According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 10 Mitigation Branch Chief Carl Cook, the event is a "must attend event" for floodplain managers and planners at all levels of government, as well as insurance, engineers, consultants, researchers and non-profit experts involved in floodplain mitigation, response and recovery, and related disciplines.
"This is the major floodplain management conference in the country, and the last to be held this century, " said Cook. "Sponsors include the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, Oregon Emergency Management, Washington Department of Ecology, EPA, the National Park Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and FEMA. Effective mitigation is all about involving stakeholders in effective partnerships, and this conference ups the ante to the next level."
