OWENSBORO, Ky. -- As recovery efforts continue in Western Kentucky counties affected by the Jan. 3 tornado, disaster relief officials are asking the public to limit donations to building materials and monetary contributions.
The Long Term Recovery warehouse, located at 123 W. 12th St., Owensboro, will remain open while the multi-agency disaster donations warehouse at Lincoln Mall on U.S. Highway 231, also in Owensboro, will no longer accept goods after Sunday, Jan. 23.
Meredith Snyder of the Adventists Community Services, the group leading the multi-agency Long Term Recovery warehouse effort, said building materials such as roofing supplies, lumber and tools are needed.
Snyder said those wishing to donate building materials should call 270-684-1515 to schedule delivery. Materials received will be disbursed under the direction of the long-term recovery committee.
"The committee will review the cases and use the materials to help meet unmet needs in the community," Snyder said.
She said response to requests for relief supplies has been "wonderful" and stressed that the warehouses were saturated with paper products, canned goods, etc.
"Building supplies are just now starting to trickle in," Snyder said. "These items will be used to help people throughout the region who fall through the cracks or aren't covered by other programs."
Owensboro-Daviess County officials continue to accept monetary donations. Contributions may be sent to the Owensboro-Daviess County Disaster Relief Fund, c/o Kathy Estes, Owensboro City Hall, P.O. Box 10003, Owensboro, KY 42302.
