Registration Deadline Approaching For Survivors Of Florida Tornadoes

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Survivors of the December and February tornadoes only have a few days left to apply for disaster assistance.

Florida residents and business owners from Lake, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia counties who sustained damage from the February tornadoes may register for disaster assistance until April 4, 2007.

The second deadline for those affected by the Christmas tornadoes in Volusia County is April 9, 2007.

The toll-free number and the FEMA Website are two ways to begin the application process. Residents may call the registration line at (800) 621-FEMA (3362) or TTY (800) 462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. Multilingual operators are available through the same numbers. Residents with Internet access have the option to apply on the Web at www.fema.gov.

Federal and state officials remind those affected by the recent tornadoes that they must apply by the appropriate deadlines to receive disaster assistance.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
