Applicant Briefings For Local Officials Begin Disaster Recovery In 34 Indiana Counties

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- State and Federal officials will hold five briefings to help State, local governments and eligible private non-profit organizations in 34 counties apply for federal Public Assistance in the wake of the February 12-14 severe snow storm.
The joint announcement was made by Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) Executive Director J. Eric Dietz and U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Federal Coordinating Officer Dr. Richard J. Hinrichs. Officials from IDHS and FEMA will provide information about the scope of the public assistance program. After the briefings, teams of state and federal inspectors will schedule meetings with local officials regarding related damages and associated costs.
The objective of the Public Assistance Program is to provide assistance to states, local governments and eligible nonprofit organizations in major disasters or emergencies declared by the president.
Under the emergency declaration, FEMA will provide reimbursement to state and local government agencies for 75 percent of the total eligible costs of equipment, contracts and personnel overtime related to emergency services in dealing with the snow over a 48-hour period. These are the crucial hours when work crews clear snow from emergency routes and roads to critical facilities to permit the passage of emergency vehicles. Related emergency protective measures such as sanding and salting will also be eligible for reimbursement.
The aid, requested by Gov. Mitch Daniels and authorized under an emergency disaster declaration issued for the state by President Bush, supplements actions undertaken to alleviate the impact of the emergency in the counties of Benton, Blackford, Boone, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Delaware, Elkhart, Fountain, Fulton, Grant, Hamilton, Henry, Jasper, Jay, Kosciusko, Lake, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Miami, Montgomery, Newton, Noble, Parke, Pulaski, Putnam, Randolph, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Vermillion, Wabash, Warren and White.
Counties were included on the list based on record or near record snowfalls during the storm as determined by National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration data.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
