Richmond, KY -- For those who are recovering from the recent disasters or want to find ways to make their home, business or community more disaster resistant, FEMA's web site brings solid, practical information to your home computer.
Located at www.fema.gov, the site has information on current weather hazards, details on federally declared disasters throughout the United States and tips on how to reduce or prevent damage on your property from future storms, floods, winds and other weather-related hazards.
If you've recently suffered storm damage, the site also includes recovery information, such as:
- Before entering a building, check for structural damage. Don't go in if there is any chance of the building collapsing.
- Upon entering the building, do not use matches, cigarette lighters or any other open flames, since gas may be trapped inside. Instead, use a flashlight to light your way.
- Keep power off until an electrician has inspected your system for safety.
To better prepare your property for a flood, the web site includes the FEMA booklet, "Homeowner's Guide to Retrofitting: Six Ways to Protect Your House from Flooding."
To date, residents and businesses in 37 Kentucky counties are eligible for disaster assistance.
