Release Number: R4-03-70

Atlanta, GA -- A grant of $1,553,858 has been approved today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for Greenup County, Ky., to pay for debris removal resulting from February storms in the area.

Michael D. Brown, FEMA director and under secretary for the Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, said "part of our mission is to ensure that communities are able to get up and running quickly following disasters. This grant program helps make that happen."

FEMA pays for seventy-five percent of the costs, or $1,165,393, with the state and local governments providing the remaining $388,465.

The severe winter storms included ice, snow, heavy rains, flooding, tornadoes and mud slides. These activities resulted in the pile-up of debris through various parts of the county.

The FEMA public assistance program makes funds available for reimbursement of disaster-related damage costs to state and local governments and certain non-profit agencies that provide essential services to a community.
