Alabama Disaster Assistance Tops $13.4 Million

Birmingham, AL -- Four weeks after President Bush issued a major disaster declaration for Alabama, state and federal financial assistance to help individuals, families and businesses recover from losses suffered in the severe storms, floods and tornadoes of May exceeds $13.4 million.

Of that figure, more than $6.9 million was approved for 2,942 Housing Assistance grants. Nearly $4 million was approved for 1,147 Other Needs Assistance grants to help with disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or met by charitable organizations.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to date has approved 97 loans, totaling more than $2.5 million. The breakdown: 93 home loans totaling $2,233,100; 2 business loans for $771,500; and 2 economic injury loans for $23,700.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has received 5,675 applications for aid from residents of 38 counties designated under the disaster declaration.

Homeowners, renters and businesses in designated counties who sustained damages and losses that were uninsured or underinsured have until July 11 to register for disaster assistance with FEMA and to apply for SBA low-interest disaster loans.

FEMA's toll-free application number -- 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) -- is available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585 for applicants who are speech or hearing impaired.

The 38 counties designated for disaster assistance in Alabama are Baldwin, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Clarke, Clay, Cleburne, Colbert, Coosa, Cullman, DeKalb, Escambia, Etowah, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Lee, Limestone, Macon, Madison, Marshall, Mobile, Monroe, Morgan, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Washington.
