Release Date: June 5, 2003
Release Number: R4-03-59

Atlanta, GA -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced approval of $1,968,345 to pay for debris removal in Greensboro following last February's ice storm.

During the Feb.27-28 storm, ice accumulated on trees throughout the city. As a result, numerous trees and limbs later fell on homeowners' property and public rights of way, necessitating removal.

"Part of our mission is to ensure that communities are able to get up and running quickly following disasters," said Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response Michael D. Brown. "This grant program helps make that happen."

FEMA is paying $1,476,258, or 75 percent of the cost, with the remaining $492,087 paid by the state and local governments.

The FEMA public assistance program makes available funds for reimbursement of disaster-related damage costs to state and local governments and certain non-profit agencies that provide essential services.
