Wise, VA -- The floodwaters have receded. You registered with the Red Cross, notified local officials of your damage and even reported damage to the county emergency manager. However, there is one additional step disaster victims must take to gain access to assistance programs coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
"The Red Cross and other volunteer and local agencies provide valuable assistance, but to receive federal and state disaster assistance Virginia residents affected by the April/May flooding and severe storms must call our toll-free registration line," said Federal Coordinating Officer Louis Botta.
The FEMA toll-free registration number is 1-800-621-FEMA or 1-800-621-3362 and is available daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments should call toll-free (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.
Already, some 900 Virginians have registered for disaster assistance and $441,000 has been approved for distribution in Tazewell and Buchanan Counties.
