Use Caution When Hiring Contractors For Disaster Repairs

Poplar Bluff, MO -- State and federal recovery officials urge Missourians to be extremely careful when hiring cleanup and repair contractors. Once Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) inspectors have determined that a property owner is eligible for disaster assistance, it is time to hire a contractor.
Since scam artists often try to take advantage of storm victims, FEMA and the State Emergency Management Agency officials recommend the following:
- Check your homeowner's insurance to see if storm damage is included.
Ask the insurance company how it will decide whom to pay to do the repairs.
- Use reliable licensed contractors and hire locals if possible. Check
references, the Better Business Bureau and local business organizations
for any complaints. Make sure the contractor carries liability and workers'
compensation insurance.
- Get a written estimate and ask for a written guarantee. Read the
fine print. Compare several competing services and prices before settling
on one contractor.
- Get a written contract-never sign a blank contract! Identify all
tasks, costs, payment schedules and who will apply for permits and licenses.
If substantial cost is involved, have a lawyer review the contract.
Keep a copy of the contract. If necessary, cancel the contract in writing
within three days of signing and send notification by registered mail.
