Poplar Bluff, MO -- Disaster assistance has been made available in more Missouri counties to help residents and local governments recover from the effects of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that began April 24 and are continuing, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials announced on May 21.

As a result of recent extensive flooding, President Bush's disaster declaration of May 6 was amended on May 21 to reopen the incident period and add counties.

Residents and business owners in the following counties who sustained wind and flood damage are eligible to apply for federal aid under the amended declaration: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Crawford, Dent, Douglas, Dunklin, Jefferson, Howell, Iron, Madison, Oregon, Ozark, Perry, Reynolds, Ripley, Shannon, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stoddard, Texas, Washington and Wayne.

Affected residents and business owners in these counties may apply for assistance immediately by calling the toll-free registration number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairment.

This assistance can include grants for temporary housing, emergency home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also will be available to cover residential and business losses not fully covered by insurance.

In addition, federal funding will be available to affected local governments and certain not-for-profit organizations for repairing or replacing wind- and flood-damaged facilities in the counties of Adair, Barry, Barton, Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Dade, Dallas, Howell, Johnson, Knox, Lafayette, Lawrence, Macon, Madison, Reynolds, Shelby, Taney and Webster.

If disaster victims have already registered for disaster assistance, they should have their registration numbers at hand when calling the FEMA registration number to include recent flood damage to their existing applications.
