Poplar Bluff, MO -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are presenting free workshops, "Rebuilding a Safer, Stronger Community," from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at Three Rivers Community College, 2080 Three Rivers Boulevard, Poplar Bluff.
The free workshops will help homeowners, renters, business owners, builders and lenders learn how to diminish damage from severe storms and tornadoes. Anyone interested in building a stronger, safer community should attend one of these workshops.
The workshops will include presentations by experts on:
- Windstorm mitigation techniques for light-frame construction, an innovative approach to mitigate future high-wind losses and thus prevent property damage.
- Building a Safe Room inside your home or community shelter. These shelters are designed to provide protection from winds up to 250 miles per hour, including the impact of windborne debris. This approach reduces injuries and loss of life.
- NOAA Weather Radio. This is the quickest source for warnings of natural hazards for the general public. The key to surviving a tornado is early warning and adequate shelter.
Featured speakers are Kelly Hooper, meteorologist-National Weather Service, and Larry Tanner, research associate-Wind Science and Engineering, Texas Technical University.
