London, KY -- The initial checks, totaling over $1.1 million for housing assistance, have been mailed to residents in the 32 disaster-declared Kentucky counties who suffered damage during the severe storms, tornadoes, hailstorms and flooding of, April 27-May 10, 2002.
"Meeting housing needs for storm victims is our top priority," Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Bolch said. "We are making every effort to get this assistance to those affected as quickly as possible."
So far, 1,812 registrations have been received, 1,114 inspections have been issued and 709 registrations have been approved for $1,140,714.
The disaster housing program provides two types of assistance. Homeowners or renters whose residences were destroyed or substantially damaged may be eligible for rental assistance to help pay for a place to live until permanent housing can be found. Grants for essential home repairs also are available to homeowners for basic repairs (not covered by insurance) to make the home livable. Examples of essential repairs may include those to electrical and plumbing systems, as well as general carpentry to make a home safe, secure and livable.
State Coordinating Officer Cash Centers added, "Affected residents and business owners in the declared counties should apply for assistance immediately if they have not done so already. This can be done by calling FEMA's toll-free teleregistration number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. This number is available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., until further notice."
