President Declares Major Disaster For Micronesia

Washington, DC -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that President Bush has declared a major disaster for the Federated States of Micronesia, opening the way for the use of federal funds to help the state of Yap recover from the effects of Typhoon Mitag.
FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh said the President took the action this afternoon following a review of the agency's analysis of Micronesia's request for federal aid.
Immediately after the declaration, Allbaugh designated the state of Yap and affected municipal governments eligible for federal funding to pay 75 percent of the approved cost for repairing or replacing public facilities damaged by the storm that occurred over the period of February 26 through March 3. Funding also will be provided to pay part of the cost for the delivery of emergency food supplies to the islands and atolls of Eauripik, Elato, Ifalik, Lamotrek, Ngulu, Satawal and Woleai within the state of Yap.
In addition, Allbaugh said federal funds will be available for Micronesia on a cost-shared basis for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks. He indicated that other areas and additional forms of assistance may be designated later if requested and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
William L. Carwile III of FEMA was named by Allbaugh to coordinate federal recovery operations in the affected area.
