LAKE CHARLES, La. -- The Calcasieu Parish Long-Term Community Recovery Team is opening a storefront on Dec. 1, 2005 to be a resource center for local citizens to participate in the recovery efforts for southwest Louisiana. The storefront will officially open at 2 p.m and will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be located at 319 Broad Street in Lake Charles.

The storefront will house the Calcasieu Parish Long-Term Community Recovery Operation, in coordination with the Louisiana Recovery Authority and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “Calcasieu Parish citizens, businesses and organizations are encouraged to use the storefront to gather information on how Hurricane Rita has affected the area, what opportunities exist and how to recover and rebuild the parish and the region in the long term,” said Calcasieu Parish Police Jury President Hal McMillin.

“Long-term community recovery is forward looking and market based, focusing on the permanent restoration of infrastructure, environment, housing and the local economy,” said FEMA’s Long-Term Community Recovery Director Louis Botta. “This will provide a framework for the federal government’s ongoing support to state, regional and local governments and others to enable community recovery.”

The public is invited to give input on area needs and future recovery suggestions through the storefront. The Long-Term Community Recovery Team will also assess needs in a series of community meetings and will develop a long-term recovery plan to support both state and federal efforts.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.
