Louisiana Disaster Recovery Centers To Close On Thanksgiving

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state of Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness announced all Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) throughout the state of Louisiana will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thurs, Nov. 24.
FEMA currently operates 50 Disaster Recovery Centers in Louisiana, where individuals affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita can meet face-to-face with recovery specialists. All Louisiana DRCs will reopen at 9 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 25. A complete list of Louisiana DRCs is included at the conclusion of this release.
Louisiana residents affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita should register for assistance before visiting a DRC by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or online at www.fema.gov. Hearing or speech impaired individuals may register by calling 1-800-462-7585. Lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.
Representatives of state, federal, and voluntary agencies, as well as Customer Service Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Disaster Assistance will be on hand to answer questions and provide recovery information. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at Disaster Recovery Centers. These centers are for the dissemination of information to assist in victim recovery. Written materials about various programs are also available to individuals and business owners.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
SBA is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts, and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover uninsured and uncompensated losses and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.
