Nashville, TN -- Tennesseans who are repairing or rebuilding homes and businesses following May's tornadoes and floods will be offered ideas for making them more disaster resistant at a series of workshops in Jackson, Chattanooga and Murfreesboro.

Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) will host six hazard mitigation workshops in The Home Depot and Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse stores between June 1 and July 12.

FEMA's mitigation community education and outreach program will offer plans and publications for individual use in making structures less vulnerable to known hazards. Examples would be the construction of a safe room in a private home as a tornado shelter and elevating essential heating, air conditioning and electrical appliances above a known flood elevation.

The workshops will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. according to this schedule:

Jackson:
Home Depot - June 1-7;
Lowe's - June 8-14

Murfreesboro:
Lowe's - June 15-21
Home Depot -- June 22-28

Chattanooga:
Home Depot - June 29-July 5
Lowe's - July 6-July 12
