Albany, NY -- Federal and state disaster officials announced today that 1,163 individuals have registered for disaster relief from Cayuga, Monroe, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Seneca and Wayne counties. A total of $266,799 in federal disaster assistance grants has been approved to date for 200 New Yorkers after the President's major disaster declaration for New York State in the wake of the April 3-5 ice storm. In addition, the U.S. Small Business Administration, which provides low interest disaster loans, has approved seven loans for $49,000, according to Marianne C. Jackson, Federal Coordinating Officer for the recovery operation.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the New York State Emergency Management Office (NYSEMO) urge homeowners, renters, and businesses to call the toll-free teleregistration/helpline, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to begin the assistance process. Hearing and/or speech impaired individuals can call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). Both toll-free numbers are open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week, closing on Monday, May 26th only, in observance of Memorial Day. Jackson advises those who have suffered damages to make this easy phone call.

"The President's disaster declaration also triggered aid to government and certain private non-profit agencies for the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Monroe, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Wayne and Yates," explained Edward F. Jacoby, Jr., State Coordinating Officer and Director of NY SEMO. NYSEMO is setting up briefings for local and government officials beginning next week.
