Jackson, MS -- The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will deploy a mobile Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) to Columbia, Miss., Wednesday and Thursday, May 28 and 29, to bring state and federal disaster assistance information directly into neighborhoods affected by the April 6th through 25th severe storms, tornadoes and flooding.

The purpose of the visit is to advise affected residents on how to obtain the disaster aid they are eligible to receive. The unit will be located at the Marion-Jefferson Davis County Civil Defense, 502 Courthouse Square in Columbia. It will be open both days from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Staffed by disaster assistance specialists from MEMA, FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and other state agencies, the mobile unit will enable those who have already registered for assistance to check the status of their applications and inquire about other disaster assistance programs. It is recommended that applicants call the toll-free disaster assistance application number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), before visiting the DRC. Those with speech or hearing impairment should call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

Marion County was added to President Bush's disaster declaration on May 19. The deadline to apply for federal/state assistance is June 23, 2003.
