Albany, NY -- Federal and state disaster recovery officials urge victims of the April 3-5 ice storm in Cayuga, Monroe, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Seneca and Wayne counties to register now for disaster assistance programs by calling a toll-free number teleregistration/helpline, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The hearing and/or speech impaired can call the TTY number, 1-800-462-7585.

Marianne C. Jackson, federal coordinating officer for the disaster recovery operation, encourages homeowners, renters and business owners in these counties who suffered damages to apply for assistance immediately by calling the toll free number, which is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days a week. "You must apply for disaster assistance before inspectors will view your damaged property," said Jackson. "That's how the assistance process begins." Disaster aid may include grants for home repair or rent and low-interest loans.

"During the ice storm, many people had water seepage in basements when power for sump pumps was out, resulting in damages to furnaces and water heaters. Those damages may be eligible for disaster aid," said Edward F. Jacoby, State Coordinating Officer and director of the State Emergency Management Agency. Most homeowner's insurance policies do not cover damages from water seepage. Applicants should obtain a letter from their insurance companies stating that they lack this coverage. After registering by phone with FEMA, applicants should call the FEMA teleregistration/helpline number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) and provide the insurance denial information.

The funds for disaster assistance for individuals and business owners in the eight counties were authorized under a major disaster declaration signed on May 12 by President Bush, after a request from Governor Pataki.
