Disaster Assistance Centers Opening To Help Mississippians Affected By The Early April Severe Weather

Jackson, MS -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) announced today the following information related to federal/state disaster aid assistance for Mississippi residents who were affected by the April 6th through 14th, 2003 severe storms, tornadoes and flooding:
- A Mobile Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will visit the following sites in Warren and Yazoo counties, beginning this Monday, May 5, 2003:

- FEMA and MEMA disaster management officials will open two Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs), one each in Lauderdale and Lincoln Counties, beginning Monday, May 5th. These two DRCs will remain open every day, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., until further notice.

- Citizens affected by the severe weather, tornadoes, and flooding of April 6th - 14th need to call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 (speech or hearing impaired) first to initiate the disaster assistance application process. Once citizens register by calling the toll free application hotline, they may receive a disaster assistance application packet in the mail within two to three days. Applicants can help speed the disaster assistance and recovery process by returning the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan application as soon as possible, if they receive one.
- A total of $3,180,638 in federal/state disaster aid has been approved for Mississippi residents who were affected by the April 6th through 14th, 2003 severe storms, tornadoes and flooding. The following is a breakdown of the more than $3 million in federal/state disaster aid approved for Mississippians:
Individual & Household Program (IHP) $3,021,338
U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) $ 159,300
- As of today, May 3, there are 1,376 Mississippians who have applied for the various forms of federal/state disaster assistance.
