WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Iowa state officials report flooding continues along the Cedar and Shell Rock Rivers. There has been one death associated with the flooding.
The Iowa Emergency Operations Center in Des Moines is activated. The Iowa National Guard continues to provide staff and sandbags to various communities throughout the affected areas.
The National Weather Service forecast for Iowa calls for scattered rain and thunderstorms today.
The American Red Cross has shelters open in Waverly, Charles City, Plainview, Waterloo, Mason City and Shell Rock.
As of 3 p.m. EDT yesterday, the Charles City (Floyd County) river gage was completely underwater on the Cedar River. Local officials reported that the river was slowly receding. The Cedar River at Janesville (Bremer County) crested six feet above flood stage yesterday.
Major flooding was reported in Waverly (Bremer County). The river is expected to crest nine feet or more above flood stage at Waterloo (Black Hawk County) today. Extensive flooding is expected in the northern part of Cedar Falls (Linn County).
The Shell Rock River was five feet above flood stage at Marble Rock (Floyd County) as of 8 a.m. yesterday. The river has crested and was expected to be only two feet above flood stage by this morning. At the village of Shell Rock (Bremer County), the river was 4.5 feet above flood stage with the crest expected this morning.
FEMA staff from the regional office in Kansas City (Region VII) are working with state officials to set up a Disaster Field Office in Iowa.
