Lummi Nation Is First In Nation In Hazard Mitigation
Department of Homeland Security Approves Lummi Nation Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan Updates

Seattle, Wash. -- Officials from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have approved the update to the Lummi Nation Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan.
“FEMA commends the Lummi Nation for a timely and proactive updating of their multi-hazard mitigation plan,” said Susan Reinertson, FEMA Regional Administrator for Washington Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. “Through these efforts, the Lummi Nation is eligible to apply for Public Assistance, Fire Management Assistance, Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, Pre-Disaster Mitigation, and Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) grants through May 30, 2010.” Funding for these grant programs is made available through the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (the Stafford Act).
“The Lummi Nation is committed to maintaining a comprehensive and current multi-hazard mitigation plan for the welfare of our community,” said Lummi Nation Tribal Chairwoman Evelyn Jefferson. “By ensuring that our Hazard Mitigation plan addresses the ever-changing hazards that might occur within our community, we’re actively developing – and managing – a living blueprint for reducing the impact of future natural disasters.”
The Lummi Nation’s Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan was the first plan in the Nation to meet the new federal plan update requirements mandated by the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA2K). As a result of the DMA2K, states and tribes are required to develop and maintain hazard mitigation plans compliant with FEMA standards as a condition for receiving direct non-emergency Stafford Act assistance.
FEMA coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
