ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to fund crisis counseling services for Florida hurricane disaster victims in need.

Individuals who need someone to speak with concerning problems that may be heightened by delayed rebuilding, displacement, financial strain or holiday stress will find counseling through Project HOPE, administered by the Florida Department of Children and Families. The toll-free Crisis Counseling Hotline at 1-866-518-1825 is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“The holiday season is a difficult time for some under normal conditions. Add in the impact of the disasters, and people may have a harder time coping mentally,” said State Coordinating Officer Craig Fugate of the State Emergency Response Team (SERT).

Counseling is available by phone, face-to-face at various locations, through home visits and at some of the FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Centers. Counselors are available to visit schools, nursing homes and community events in an effort to reach out to children, the elderly and disabled. These services are available to hurricane victims in counties declared major disasters by President Bush.

“FEMA understands that victims experience many new anxieties and emotions after disasters,” said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Bill Carwile. “We are committed to helping them get back on their feet, and encourage those who desire and need someone to speak with professionally to take advantage of this service.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
