New York Individual Assistance Disaster Recovery Totals $3.3 Million

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and State Emergency Management Office officials continue response and recovery efforts for those affected by the severe storms and flooding of April 2-4.

More than $3.3 million has been approved for Housing Assistance. Housing Assistance may include lodging expense reimbursement, repair assistance and temporary rental assistance.

More than 2,000 New Yorkers have applied for disaster assistance. County breakdown of eligible applicants follows:

Four Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open in Broome, Cortland, Orange and Ulster Counties. DRCs are designed to provide applicants with an opportunity to discuss their needs with personnel from state, federal and voluntary organizations who can answer questions and provide recovery information about various programs available to individuals and business owners. To date, 150 individuals have visited the four DRCs. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

Before visiting a DRC, homeowners, renters and business owners in declared counties who had loss or damage from the disaster are urged to register for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speech impairments. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Saturday until further notice. People also may register online at www.fema.gov.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
