ALEXANDRIA, La. -- Louisiana residents who suffered losses from the recent severe storms and flooding and continue to have unmet needs may seek help through a number of volunteer groups coordinated by a long-term recovery committee.

"We would like to encourage Louisiana residents to take advantage of our "211 Program" when looking for additional assistance," said Neal Fudge, deputy state coordinating officer. "It is a valuable resource as it unites those who want to help with those who most need assistance."

Residents may dial 2-1-1 on their phones to obtain information on local volunteer agencies working in their parish. The "211" operators have phone numbers, program and services information, locations, hours of operation and other relevant resources. Those who call 211 may be referred to resources including housing assistance, counseling services, employment opportunities and health services.

"The volunteer groups are vital elements in all state and federal recovery efforts as they focus on helping families develop effective recovery plans," said Richard Hinrichs, deputy federal coordinating officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

All victims of the recent flooding should register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585. Louisiana residents may also register online at www.fema.gov or at a local disaster recovery center.

The long-term recovery committee plan was born after the 1971 devastation of Hurricane Camille. Since then, annual meetings are held, by representatives of organizations that make up the National Voluntary Organization Active in Disasters (NVOAD). Their primary goal, which is also the keystone of a long-term recovery effort, is to increase cooperation, coordination, communication and education.

For individuals seeking more information and/or possible participation, here are two volunteer groups currently working in Louisiana:

Salvation Army, 1-800-725-2769
American Red Cross (ARC), 1-866-GET-INFO (1-866-438-4636)

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
