Mississippi Coastal Preliminary Flood Maps Make Debut

PEARL, Miss – Residents in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties will be able to view the newly revised Preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps this week as they are posted online at the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality’s Web site at http://geology.deq.ms.gov/floodmaps.

The maps were produced in a partnership of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.

For residents who do not have computer access, they may view the maps at one of three public Flood Risk Open Houses that will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Dec. 11-13.

At the open houses, residents will be able to view the maps on computers or a printed version. Local, state and federal officials will be available to help answer questions.

Property owners, realtors, lenders and insurance agents are encouraged to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about flood risk and hazard mitigation within their communities.

Residents can also ask questions about the flood maps by calling 1-866-816-2804. The phone line is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
