Emergency Response Teams Join Industry To Test Caddo and Bossier Parishes' Chemical Response Plans

DENTON, Texas -- Are Shreveport and Bossier City ready for a chemical spill? We are about to find out. FEMA, the State, and the communities of Shreveport and Bossier City are preparing to test local response to hazardous materials incidents.
Local officials have spent months refining and developing emergency response procedures. Fire, law enforcement, medical staff and industry will jointly test the plan in a two-hour exercise on September 20, at 10:00am. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region VI will direct the evaluation.
The evaluation will use a national program developed by FEMA Region VI called CHER-CAP- Comprehensive Hazmat Emergency Response - Capability Assessment Program.
Exercise players are from city, county and state governments, private business, volunteer organizations and FEMA. They include fire, law enforcement, medical staff and local industries. Arch Chemicals, Dupre' Transport, and Pennzoil-Quaker State, along with Barksdale Air Force Base and the American Red Cross, are partnering with others to support the exercise.
Peer evaluators will document the participant's activities. Northwest Louisiana State University School of Nursing, Louisiana Technical College, Bossier Technical School and the Fair Park Medical Careers Magnet will provide mock victims and evacuees. The public is welcome to observe the exercise at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds.
