Five Region III Communities Join Project Impact

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Five communities in Region III have joined Project Impact, FEMA's nationwide effort to create disaster-resistant communities. They are: Wilmington, Delaware; Cecil County, Maryland; Union County, Pennsylvania; Central Virginia Planning District Commission, Virginia; and Jefferson County, West Virginia.
Created by FEMA Director James Lee Witt, Project Impact: Building a Disaster-Resistant Community, is designed to change the way America deals with disasters by encouraging communities to assess their vulnerabilities to hazards and implement strategies to limit damage before disasters occur. Project Impact communities receive technical support from FEMA. A local partnership of government, the business community and individual citizens provides funding, in-kind services, technical support and labor to undertake actions to reduce disaster risks.
"Communities across this country need to be prepared for the disasters that we know will come," said Rita A. Calvan, director of FEMA Region III. "FEMA invited these communities to participate in Project Impact because of their demonstrated commitment to emergency preparedness and the economic and environmental well-being of the people they serve."
