CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Residents of Nicholas County recovering from recent storms now have a resource center they can visit to get help with a variety of recovery issues, according to state and federal disaster recovery officials.

The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) opens Friday, November 28, in Hamlin at the following location:

RICHWOOD CITY HALL
6 WHITE AVENUE
RICHWOOD, WV

The center will be open seven day a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday until further notice.

Those who were affected by the severe storms, flooding and landslides that began on November 11, in the disaster-designated counties can use this free resource to talk with recovery specialists.

Federal and state disaster recovery officials encourage citizens to first apply for disaster assistance by calling the toll-free application number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week until further notice. Persons who are hearing or speech impaired can apply by calling a special TTY number: 1-800-462-7585.

These centers use a “one-stop” concept so those who need assistance can get information on state and federal disaster recovery programs in one location. Persons visiting a DRC can get the following information:

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
