FEMA Announces Fire Grants To New Mexico First Responders

FEMA representatives and Congresswoman Heather Wilson will announce fire grants to several New Mexico departments in a ceremony to be held Friday, November 14, 2003.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will award $750 million this year directly to fire departments across the country to improve fire operations and firefighter safety, strengthen emergency medical services and promote fire prevention. Nearly 7,000 departments will receive awards.

To date, 36 New Mexico departments have received $2,864,881 from the 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
