Boone County Added For Governmental Disaster Aid

CHARLESTON, W.V. -- Boone County has been designated for Hurricane Ivan disaster aid for public facilities, officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services announced today.

This new designation brings to 22 the West Virginia counties eligible for various forms of disaster assistance under the declaration issued by President Bush on September 20, 2004.

Boone joins 14 other counties that are eligible for varying levels of reimbursement for debris removal, emergency protective actions and restoration of public facilities such as roads and water treatment plants. Federal funds will finance 75 percent of governmental projects approved for assistance; the state provides the remaining 25 percent.

The 14 other counties eligible for governmental assistance are Brooke, Hancock, Jackson, Lincoln, Marshall, Mason, Ohio, Pleasants, Tyler, Clay, Logan, Putnam, Mingo and Wetzel.

The 22 West Virginia counties now declared federal disaster aid counties are: Berkeley, Boone Brooke, Cabell, Clay, Hancock, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marshall, Mason, Mingo, Morgan, Ohio, Pleasants, Putnam, Tyler, Wayne, Wetzel, Wirt and Wood.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
