Sixth Disaster Recovery Center Opened To Further Assist July 21-22 Storm Victims

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will open a sixth Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) next week to assist Shelby County residents who were affected by the July 21st - 22nd, 2003, severe storms, high winds and heavy rain.

The new DRC, located at the Riverview Park Community Center, 1891 Kansas Street in Memphis, will be open from Tuesday, September 2nd through Saturday, September 6th. The office will be operational from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., each day.

TEMA requested FEMA open the additional DRC to more conveniently serve storm victims located in southwestern Memphis.

Representatives of FEMA and the SBA will be on hand to assist individuals with their applications for federal and state disaster aid. Storm victims will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with disaster officials and discuss their personal damage situations. Individuals may also use this opportunity to check on the status of their filed applications for aid.

Fayette and Shelby County residents who were affected by the late July severe weather have until Monday, September 29th to apply for assistance. Anyone who has not yet applied should do so as soon as possible by calling FEMA's application line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The hearing or speech impaired should call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
