More Than 60 Calls Received On Final Day; More Than $23 Million Approved In Disaster Assistance For West Virginians

Charleston, WV -- More than 60 West Virginians called to apply for disaster assistance on Aug. 20, 2003 - the final day that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free number was available to accept applications. More than $23 million in state and federal assistance has already been approved to help those who were affected by the severe storms, flooding and landslides beginning June 11 and lasting through July 15, 2003.

Federal and state disaster officials offer the following 60-day assistance summary:

Individuals or business owners who need to provide additional information concerning their application can call FEMA's Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) and select "Option 3." For the hearing or speech impaired, the TTY number is 800-462-7585. The Helpline is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
