Corpus Christi, TX - The Disaster Recovery Center in Eagle Hall at 204 4th Street in Palacios is scheduled to close at 6 p.m. on August 28, 2003. Disaster Recovery Centers are designed to provide information to those who have already registered for state and federal assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA. Those with speech or hearing impairments may call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.

Two other Disaster Recovery Centers are still in operation:

These centers are open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

South Texans in the 18 disaster designated counties (Aransas, Atascosa, Bee, Brazoria, Calhoun, DeWitt, Frio, Galveston, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Live Oak, Matagorda, McMullen, Refugio, Victoria, San Patricio and Zavala) who suffered losses or damage as a result of Hurricane Claudette may apply for assistance or discuss their existing application by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The deadline to apply for assistance is Monday, September 15, 2003.

After that date, South Texans who need to check on the status of their application, or to provide additional information will still be able to do so by calling the same number, 1-800-621-FEMA. The Helpline will be available to provide information even after the registration deadline has passed.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
