Nashville, TN -- Two new U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster recovery workshops opened today in Memphis to assist individuals and businesses affected by the July 21st - 22nd severe storms, high winds and heavy rain.

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will also be on hand to assist individuals with their questions about the various FEMA/State disaster aid programs; however, the primary mission of the new workshops is to assist applicants with completing and returning their SBA loan applications.

The two new SBA workshop locations are as follows:

Whitehaven Community Center
4318 Graceland Drive
Monday through Friday
9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Gaisman Community Center
4221 Macon Road
Monday Through Friday
9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

FEMA's mobile Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) - a mobile unit allowing disaster officials to provide disaster assistance information to outlying areas - will relocate to Hickory Hill, 3910 Ridgeway Road in Memphis, on Thursday, August 21st, following its assignment at the City Hall in Moscow, Tenn. The mobile unit will be available to assist disaster assistance applicants on Thursday, from 12 Noon to 7:00 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, August 22 and 23, the unit will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The fixed-site FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center, which has been operating with representatives from FEMA, the state and the SBA since August 4th at the Fairgrounds, 315 S. Hollywood Street, in Memphis, will continue to operate there in the same manner until further notice. The hours of operation there are from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

While the two SBA workshops will concentrate on assisting applicants with their applications for SBA low-interest loans, the mobile and fixed-site DRCs will concentrate their efforts on providing storm victims with information on the various disaster aid programs now available as a result of President Bush's disaster declaration of July 29th.

All applicants for disaster aid are urged to apply for assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free application line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), before visiting any of the disaster recovery offices. The hearing or speech impaired should call TTY-1-800-462-7585. After applying for aid, applicants are encouraged to visit either an SBA workshop or a FEMA/State DRC to learn more about the array of disaster assistance programs that are available to those affected by the late July severe weather.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
