Frankfort, KY -- Nobody can stop a flood. Nobody can erase the bad memories and financial loss. Having flood insurance is the first line-of-defense and can go a long way toward putting the pieces back together.

That is the message that state and federal disaster recovery officials are sending to residents of 21 Kentucky counties in the aftermath of the severe storms and flooding of June 14-27. Officials are urging homeowners and renters to purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Floods are caused by many events: storms, melting snow, or dam or levee failure. Everyone needs flood insurance. More than 90 per cent of all Presidentially-declared disasters include flooding.

On March 1, 2003 FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
