Pembroke, ME Awarded $83,167 in Federal Funding

Boston, Mass. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Maine announced the release of $70,099 and $13,068 in Hazard Mitigation grants to the Town of Pembroke, ME in Washington County. These grants will fund the Ox Cove Road Grading and the Sipp Road Drainage Projects, respectively. FEMA's share is $62,375 in federal funding with additional matching contributions of $20,792.
Ox Cove Road historically has served several family farmstands. The road suffers damage from spring water run-off and winter ice formation annually, rendering the roadway impassable. With the influx of year-round families with children, Ox Cove Road needs to be accessible at all times to emergency service providers and school buses. This project proposes to upgrade Ox Cove Road to provide safe year-round access.
The Sipp Road Drainage Project involves upgrading the culvert beneath the roadway where Sipp Brook flows into Sipp Bay. This culvert has been damaged and the embankment eroded by winter ice flow and tidal waters. The purpose of this project is to upgrade the existing culvert to prevent future ice damage and erosion to the embankment.
"These mitigation projects exemplify how communities like Pembroke are protecting themselves from future damages and becoming disaster resistant. This is a positive step towards safeguarding the public and reducing the loss of property due to natural hazards," said Kenneth L. Horak, Acting Regional Director of FEMA Region I in Boston.
These grants were made as the result of a state initiative through FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). The purpose of this program is to implement cost-effective measures that reduce or eliminate damage and risk from the effects of natural disasters.
