Telephone Registration Lines Closed On Thanksgiving Day

SALEM, Va. -- Telephone lines for victims of Tropical Depression Jeanne to register for disaster assistance will be closed Thanksgiving Day, federal and state officials said today.
The lines are closed Thursday, Nov. 25, but will reopen on Friday, Nov. 26.
Homeowners, renters and business owners in the counties of Alleghany, Botetourt, Craig, Giles, Montgomery, Floyd, Patrick and Roanoke, and the cities of Roanoke and Salem can apply for aid by calling the special Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free application number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585.
Both lines are open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily. Those wishing to check on the status of their application can also call the toll-free numbers.
Storm victims with Internet access can register at fema.gov. That Web site will be open on the holiday.
Farmers who had damage from Tropical Storm Jeanne to their primary residence should register with FEMA. If access to the primary residence is limited due to storm damage, they should also register with FEMA. For other agriculture damage, farmers should contact their Farm Service Agency office.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
