State and federal recovery officials today reminded West Virginians in the panhandle that the Wellsburg Disaster Recovery Center closes at 5 p.m., November 11, but that the Wheeling Disaster Recovery Center is open until further notice.

“The need for these facilities has diminished and we are consolidating our operations at the Wheeling center,” Federal Coordinating Officer Lou Botta of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said. The Wheeling center is located at 56 16th Street and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.”

State Coordinating Officer Steve Kappa of the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services also reminded West Virginians that the deadline to register for disaster assistance in West Virginia is November 19.

“Ohio and Pennsylvania also were declared federal disasters areas and the deadline in those states is November 18. The close proximity of these states to our panhandle counties may confuse some folks. Our deadline is November 19. Please call 1-800-621-3362, hours 6 a.m. to midnight, to register if you have disaster related damages,” Kappa said.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
