ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) disaster assistance registration and Helpline number will now be open from 6 a.m. until midnight (EST) seven days a week beginning Sunday, Nov.7, federal and state disaster officials announced today.

To register for aid or to check on the status of applications already made - call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

To date, FEMA has received more than 1,091,452 calls from hurricane victims.

Officials encourage victims who have not called the registration number to do so. Only by making that call can they receive the full range of disaster assistance available.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
