Nearly $3 Million In Disaster Aid To South Carolinians

Columbia, S.C. -- Families and individuals who suffered damage from the multiple storms that began with Hurricane Frances on September 6 and continued through October 11 are receiving assistance from state, federal, local and voluntary agencies. Residents with storm damage must apply for assistance by December 6. SBA loan applications must also be in by that date.
Recovery services summary as of 8 a.m., Friday, November 5, 2004:
- 5,143 individuals have called the FEMA toll free registration number 800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 800-462-7585. Individuals and business owners should call to register for disaster related state and federal assistance.
- Toll free registration phone line hours will be changed. Beginning Sunday, November 7, the new hours will be 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.
- The final day to register for disaster assistance is December 6, 2004.
- $2,941,619 in grants has been disbursed to residents in South Carolina through the Individuals and Households Program.
- $16,900 in loans has been approved by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to date.
- 1,859 loan applications (1,604 home applications and 255 business applications) have been issued by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Only 213 loan applications have been returned to the SBA. Applications must be in by December 6, 2004.
- 930 people visited the temporary Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs).
- 4,486 home inspections have been requested. There are 24 inspectors in the field.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
