Little Rock, AR -- Many Arkansas farmers have experienced die-offs among their herds during the severe ice storms that hit the state in December. The new number to call for guidelines on disposal is 501-907-2400.
The Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission and other agencies responding to the situation have issued preliminary information on disposal of large animal carcasses after this disaster.
While there is no immediate public health problem, farmers experiencing livestock deaths should bury the animals two to four feet in depth with a minimum of two feet of dirt covering the carcass. Carcass burial should be 100 yards from all wells and streams to prevent water contamination. It is recommended that owners place no more than two to three animals in one burial location.
If you have additional questions about appropriate burial sites, contact the local Natural Resources Conservation Service or County Extension Agent. Farmers suffering losses to livestock may contact the local Farm Service Agency for possible indemnification (partial reimbursement).
